If you’re moving to the U.S. soon, here’s one thing you probably didn’t expect to stress over: buying a bed.
It sounds simple, until you realize that the “1.5-meter bed” you used to sleep on back home doesn’t exist here. Instead, you’ll see names like Twin, Full, Queen, and King… and somehow, none of them seem to match what you know.
Think about it: you spend at least 8 hours a day in your bed. That’s more than four months a year lying on the same mattress. So yes, it’s worth taking a few minutes to pick one that actually fits.
🌏 Bed sizes back home — all different!
- Chinese Mainland / Taiwan: “1.2 m, 1.5 m, 1.8 m” beds (120×190 cm, 150×200 cm, 180×200 cm).
- India: “Single” ~36×75 in (91×191 cm); “Queen” and “King” vary by brand.
- Korea: Single (99×195 cm), Super Single (120×195 cm), Queen (152×195 cm). “Super Single” is unique to Korea
- Japan: Beds tend to be shorter (around 195 cm long).
- Singapore & Thailand: “Super Single” and “Queen” are popular, but again, shorter than U.S. equivalents.
So even within Asia, the standard isn’t really standard. You might think you’re used to a “Queen,” but your Queen might be someone else’s “Full”!

❓How to pick smartly
- Dorm life: Most dorms use Twin XL. Always check your school’s Housing website before buying sheets. 🛒 Explore HIPOND beds for a dorm setting →
- Off-campus apartments: Queen is the safest choice. Big enough to stretch, small enough to fit most rooms.
- Measure before you buy: Don’t assume your U.S. studio can fit a King.
- Keep sizes consistent: Bed frame, mattress, topper, and sheets all follow size codes here! Mix-matching doesn’t work.
- Plan ahead for moving: Queen or Full sizes resell more easily if you move later.
✨ In short:
Beds may look similar, but standards aren’t. Know your home country’s size, compare it with U.S. sizing, and you’ll save yourself a lot of headache (and backache).
